Summer Fashion Trends 2015

Spring may be in full swing, but we're already thinking of updating our wardrobes with all the latest summer fashion trends.

When it comes to dressing for the hot season, we like to keep it simple. From classic shirt dresses to bright and sunny colours and prints, we can't wait to add the season's top styles into our closets.

What are you waiting for? Check out the summer fashion trends we're most excited about:

1. Bright And Sunny

Yellow was a huge trend during the 2015 awards season (especially at the Golden Globes), and it was everywhere on the runways. Everyone from Cushnie et Ochs toMichael Kors sent out garments in the sunny shade, and we love it. It's such a great shade for wearing while basking in the sunshine. And it's just a downright happy colour!

2. Shirt Dresses

A great shirt dress is perfect for summer -- it's effortless, polished, and always chic. Designers like Altuzarra and Rebecca Minkoff sent versions of the wardrobe staple down the runway, proving that a classic never goes out of style. Throw one on for a day of errands, a night on the town, or even over a bathing suit on a beach holiday. It's pretty much the perfect garment.

3. Blue And White

The combination of blue and white is crisp and clean, which is perfect for summer. It's also a great alternative to wearing the typical black and white. We saw the colour combo on plenty of runways, from Diane von Furstenberg to Adeam, and Alice + Olivia, and we can't wait to try it out for ourselves.

4. Kimonos And Robes

Robes and kimonos are the perfect toppers for any outfit, and their generally relaxed fit adds a little bit of casual coolness to an ensemble. Some of our favourites for the season were from Tracy Reese and Thakoon, who presented the trend in sleek satin fabric for an extra luxe feel.

5. In Uniform

The spring/summer runways presented us with various takes on the uniform trend -- from Marc Jacob's utilitarian khaki green looks to Tommy Hilfiger's "Sergeant Pepper"-esque military ensembles -- and to be honest, we kind of loved them all. Can we ever have too many army jackets in our closet?

6. Sex Appeal

This summer, don't be afraid to get a little bit sexy! Lace-up details (Givenchy), thigh-high slits, sheer fabrics (Balmain), and short skirts (Versace) were all over the runways, proving that it's definitely the perfect season for a little skin.

7. In Bloom

What's summer without some florals? We saw versions of the print presented by designers like Simone Rocha, Marni and Chanel, all of whom really went bold with all-over prints in bright colours. Flower power forever!

8. All-White Everything

Nothing says summer quite like bright white. The crisp shade was a huge trend on the spring/summer 2015 runways. Notable designers who tried the trend were Alber Elbaz at Lanvin and Christope Lemaire. We'll definitely be trying this out for ourselves once the warm weather hits -- we'll just have to be extra careful with our summer cocktails!

Elaine Turner Clothing Is Here

FOR THE PAST FIFTEEN YEARS, Houston-based accessories designer Elaine Turner has slowly been building her fashion empire shoe by shoe, handbag by handbag. What began as a small luxury line has transformed into an enviable lifestyle brand with storefronts in Houston, Dallas, Austin, New York and Nashville.

This week Turner took her company in a new direction with the release of her first clothing line. The designer’s inaugural apparel collection features an assortment of comfortable yet incredibly chic dresses, tops, pants and shorts.

What’s more, an acute sense of Texas style is captured in the bright turquoise and coral hues, snake prints and wonderfully airy fabrics (it is hot here after all!). That’s one of the things Houston fashionistas love most about Turner: despite her success, she has never failed to pay homage to her beloved hometown. We chatted with Turner about her newest clothing line, where she shops around town and what’s in the cards for this growing company.

Houstonia: Tell me about the decision to release a clothing line. Was this something you always imagined for yourself, or was it something that came to you later in your career?

Turner: I have always had a passion for accessories. Sometimes you put on a pair of jeans or a dress and it might feel a little tight, which might not make you feel the best about yourself! Shoes always fit. Handbags and jewelry always ft. That feel-good part is what I always want to capture. I created my clothing line with just that in mind: easy-to-wear caftans, shorts that hit at just the right spot to flatter the leg and tunics in a material that feels soft and comfortable on the skin while still making you feel glamorous and pulled together.

Tell me about the process of brainstorming, executing and releasing the line.

I had a lot in mind going into it and my design team put a lot of hard work into finding the right materials, prints and silhouettes for the collection so that it is truly representative of the brand and my vision. I want women to fall in love with the pieces and how good they feel when they’re wearing it.

Image: White Bridesmaid Dresses

Lainey caftan in navyWho did you have in mind when you were designing the line?

Of course our core customer, but I really believe that the line can be worn through different generations. I love the idea of a mother, daughter and grandmother coming into the store and shopping together and having one store to do that. We designed every piece in the collection with this in mind, and it should fit into one of these categories. Some pieces might work for all ages like our Willa Bamboo Stud Earrings, and the notion behind them is one of good luck, strength and resilience. They are perfect for everyday wear and are definitely multi-generational. Our Heather Tunic Top is also a great piece for women of all ages and styles.

What were the main inspirations behind this line?

I love to have fun with fashion, so we created a custom Elaine Turner python print! Also the gold fringe on the Gabriella Tunic is handwoven. The idea of travel and escapism always play a big part in all of my collections, and the same holds true for what I want [a customer's] experience in the store to be. We want her to be able to come into our stores, sit on the pink sofas, maybe have a glass of wine and tell us about her day. And if she treats herself to something in the process that is a bonus! The main goal of my stores is to create a platform for women to connect with each other and themselves and leave feeling recharged and a little more glamorous.

Will we see anything in the new apparel that captures the Lone Star State?

Of course I am a true Texan and I love animal prints. The python definitely speaks to the big Texas glamour and the fun, brightly colored pieces also speak to that. I don’t like to take myself too seriously.

Is there a particular Elaine Turner garment that you fell in love with during the design process?

I’ve worn the Lainey Kaftan in navy and python multiple times already! It is perfect for luncheons, dinner dates and even over a swimsuit at the beach.

In terms of clothing, who are your favorite designers?

I love other Houston designers like Rebecca Hallam and Claridge + King. We carry both of their lines in all of the stores. David Peck designs a lot of the dresses I wear. Carolina Herrera is a personal favorite for her elegance and grace, which is seen in all her designs.

What’s next for Elaine Turner?

I find keeping a life balance so important. I love what I do, but I know it is just as important to make time for myself through yoga and meditation. I’ve been striving to life by the mantra of acceptance and embracing being perfectly imperfect. This has allowed me to really tap into this and become the best wife, mother and business owner I can be and to truly enjoy the beauty of the day to day.

Kate Bosworth is often hailed as the Queen of Coachella fashion and this year she did not disappoint. The 32-year-old actress turned heads in a striking cream jacket which featured beige panel detailing, crocheted three-quarter length sleeves, and a colourful embroidered pattern.

She teamed the statement piece with a sleek cream dress which showed off her slender figure, completing the look with a cream Coach Rivet Dakotah bag and a pair of brown suede ankle boots with silver star-shaped studs.

Meanwhile, jaws dropped when pop sensation Katy Perry arrived at Coachella pop-up the Soho Desert House. The Firework singer rocked a black sheer top with pink floral detailing paired with a matching maxi skirt from Australian designer Alice McCall. She complemented the look with a pair of black sandals, and wore her hair in a halo braid for ultimate festival glamour.

As well as the show-stopping performances, Coachella is renowned for having some of the glitziest parties, and this year was no different. Moschino's Jeremy Scott hosted a celebrity-filled bash on Saturday night, with fashion's elite including Alexa Chung in attendance. Meet the Designer Who Dresses Claire Underwood

Last Tuesday, designer Alvin Valley made an appearance at a cocktail party atAnn Hand in Georgetown to showcase his spring 2015 collection. Though he works out of New York, Valley has a number of ties to the Washington scene: he was named ambassador for the White House initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics; Kick Kennedy, the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Emily Black, modeled for his 2015 campaign; and he dressed one of the most widely known Washington women of all—fictional as she may be—Claire Underwood, for Season 3 of House of Cards.

Known for his well-tailored work pants, Valley’s professional, powerful aesthetic was a perfect fit for the impeccably dressed House of Cards leading lady, played by Robin Wright. To find out what it’s like to dress Wright for her role as Claire Underwood, Shop Around got in touch with Valley for a Q&A.

Pictures: bridal dresses

How were you chosen to dress Wright for her character Claire Underwood?

A friend of mine is an assistant director on the show. He loves my collection, and he thought it was perfect for the show and Ms. Wright’s character. He invited me on set and introduced me to Ms.Wright who I found very warm and engaging. I saw her do some scenes and loved how professional and patient she was with the other actors. After that, we talked about fashion and her character. It was a natural fit.

Claire’s look is very powerful. How do you use her wardrobe to create that affect?

Oddly enough, Claire’s character is a woman that I envision as a client of mine. She’s powerful and—though attached—very independent in her thinking. She likes power. The Alvin Valley woman has traditional values, but lives in a more experimental world.

What do you like about dressing a Washington woman?

I absolutely adore Washington women—they have a true fashion sense, just as my clients in New York do. Women in DC tend to have a straightforward business look. One that is no non-sense, conservative but feminine. They look at fashion with a twist, a component that enhances their look—it’s not “the” statement.

What is the “Washington woman” aesthetic?

Straightforward, conservative and feminine.

What are the components of the perfect work pant?

The components for the perfect work pant include versatility—being a part of a beautifully tailored suit during the day, to being the piece that completes the perfect evening outfit. Women today don’t have the time to be changing in the middle of their workday. I am all about bringing a complete look, or uniform, so women can focus on their work and not their outfit.

What are the three things that every professional woman needs in her closet?

A great black suit, an amazingly feminine colorful blouse, and a great tailored skirt.

Want to dress like Claire Underwood? Check out Alvin Valley’s online shop to add some power pants to your wardrobe.

Cara Delevingne eyeliner look could lead to blurred vision

The trendy eyeliner look of models such as Cara Delevingne and Kylie Jenner could lead to eye infections and blurred vision, according to scientists.

Millions of women could be risking discomfort and even contamination by copying the current craze of applying lots of liner to create "big eyes" with a "feline flick" for effect.

That is because it means applying eyeliner beneath the line of eyelashes where tiny particles get into the eyes, said university researchers.

It is particularly bad for those who wear contact lenses because the particles stick to the lenses instead of getting washed out by the eye's natural defences, they found.

Eye specialist Dr Alison Ng, now of Canada's University of Waterloo, began the study when she was at Cardiff University for the journal Eye and Contact Lens Science and Clinical Practice.

Psoriasis sufferer Cara Delevingne: 'covered in scabs’ at Paris Fashion Week

Pictures: best wedding dresses

She found women who apply eyeliner on the inner eyelid run a 15 to 30 per cent higher risk of contaminating the eye - leading to infection, blurred vision or irritation.

Eyeliner particles from below the lash line "migrate" into the thin film coating protecting the eye within five minutes of being applied.

Women always run the risk of getting bits of make up, mascara or eyeliner in their eyes, particularly if they are applying it in a hurry such as on the train.

But the researchers noticed the migration happened a lot quicker when eyeliner was applied to the inner eyelid, which happens with a variety of current fashion trends.

Dr Ng said: "We noticed that the make-up migration happened quicker and was greater when eyeliner was put on the inner lid margin."

In many cases, most of the particles wash away within two hours but they can stick to contact lenses causing greater discomfort and are worse for sensitive or dry eyes.

And it is worse if eyeliner is continuously being applied because tiny particles are allowed to then build up, said Dr Ng. This is because many of the ingredients of eyeliner, such as oils, silicones, gums and waxes are designed to make the product stick so it adheres to eyelids.

Dr Ng added: "People who wear contact lenses are most likely to notice some problems. If they have eyeliner stuck to their lenses, increasing deposits might cause vision disruption as the lens becomes cloudier."

She advised: "If you thoroughly sharpen your pencil eyeliner before each application and get rid of the stuff that's stuck to the end, you'll have a fresh tip which can help prevent infection.

"With twist-up eyeliner, cut some off the end before each use. And always make sure to fully remove eye makeup before bed."
