Beauty hacks for winter wedding

Amongst all the bridal make-up tips, getting your skin to look healthy and glowing on the wedding day is very important. Simply taking care of it a week before the day is not enough. Your skin needs time to take in nourishment and treatments, says an expert.

Kalpana Sharma, make-up artist from The Body Shop, has listed some tips on bridal make-up in winter.

* Overdoing the treatments may lead to further damage. Make time for yourself and indulge in the treatments at least six weeks prior to the ceremony to give your skin time to work. In winters, the face has a tendency to look darker and duller due to dryness in the atmosphere. So, you should use and apply the right foundation to look flawless and patch less.

* Indian brides love to use bold and bright colours for their marriage ceremonies. In order to obtain a long-lasting look, you should start by cleansing your face well. Prime up your skin two minutes post moisturising and blend it well. This helps to keep your concealer and foundation in place, and keeps the make-up intact for long hours.

Moisture foundation would be a good option for smooth and even coverage than a matte finish.

* Use a highlighter instead of shimmer or glitter. The main attempt should be to make the skin appear glowing and not shimmery. Highlight the bridge of the nose, the chin, the forehead and the higher planes of the face.

* Indian brides love gold eye make-up since it goes well with their red, fuchsia, or green lehengas, ghagras, or heavy saris. So, if you want to play it safe, this is the colour to go with. You can also use golden eyeshadow instead of silver for the brow bones.

* If you have the ceremonies during the day, then keep the make-up minimal and opt for a more natural look. If you are going for a night time wedding, keep the make-up heavy and add more colours. If you have a morning wedding, choose pastel shades for the eye make-up.

* Use a lip balm each time you feel your lips are dry. Do not lick or bite your lips. This will dry the lips and cause them to become chapped and flaky.

The annual big, fat wedding season

Post-demonetisation, Mumbai's bustling and glittering Zaveri Bazar, the national bullion and jewellery market, wears a forlorn, deserted look.

Thousands of big and small jewellery shops and glittering showrooms in India's oldest and biggest hub, as well as retail outlets in the eastern and western suburbs, eagerly await the elusive customers.

The annual big, fat wedding season that is underway -- with an average of 15,000 weddings scheduled in Mumbai every month till May-June -- usually means a money-spinner. This year it is passing by without a ripple.

"I have taken some small orders for bridal gold jewellery sets, well before the demonetisation and kept them ready. Now, the customers are not prepared to take delivery as they have no money to pay their bills," rued S.K. Velly, the proprietor of Pramila Jewellers in the suburbs.

Some customer now demand they be permitted to make payments in instalments, but Velly rejected this, saying it's not possible since he has to pay upfront at all other levels -- and the ready bridal jewellery sets lie in the shop.

Many others are apprehensive of Big Brother -- the Income Tax Department -- and refuse to either make or accept cheque/online payments to avoid future complications.

Major bodies like the Indian Bullion and Jewellers Association, the All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation, the Mumbai Jewellers Association and other trade associations are "extremely concerned" but unable to do much.

Mumbai Jewellers Association Vice President Surinder Kumar Jain said that in terms of volumes, the industry has taken an unprecedented beating with business down by "more than 90 percent" in the peak wedding season.

"The average sales here is around 3.4-4 tonnes of gold, bullion, jewellery, and other items, worth an estimated around Rs 125 crore. Post-demonetisation, it has plummeted to less than 10 percent daily, or around Rs 10-12 crores value," Jain revealed.

After a modest 2015, this year was expected to herald cheerful days with a good monsoon, overall positive sentiments in the economy and the bullion industry was preparing to cash in on a good 2016.

Since January, Jain said there have been huge imports of gold, around 120 tonnes, to cater to the marriage season, investments and corporate requirements. "But that investment and gold is simply stuck. We can't sell it or throw it away."

Both Jain and Velly are worried that if the supply position of currency notes does not improve immediately, they may be compelled to down shutters, retrench staff and move out to other smaller locations in the country.

The industry directly employees around 3.75 crore artisans across India, besides another 50-lakh plus in jewellery trade like owners of retail shops, their well-paid staffers and other allied service providers.

Mumbai Jewellers Federation President Rakesh Shetty said that "gold, silver and jewellery shops are full" but there are no takers after the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.

"There are some claims that a part of the business has gone to the online portals, but that is far from the truth. We are in a severe crisis, never seen before," Shetty said.

While around 5,000-plus shops and showrooms are located in the crowded Zaveri Bazar in south Mumbai, another 27,000-odd dot the city and suburbs, accounting for nearly two-thirds of all gold trading and business in India.

Some of the smaller shops with minimal stocks of gold or silver jewellery, struggle to make ends meet with repairs or polishing or modifying customers' existing jewellery, but that is barely 10 percent of their normal business activities.

Shetty said that against cheques, RTGS (real-time gross settlement) or new currency notes, gold is being sold in minuscule quantities by retailers at around Rs 29,000 ($422) per tola (10 gms).

"The rates havd sharply come down by around Rs 1,500 per tola since Dhanteras (preceding the Diwali festival in late October). Actually, this is the start of the annual wedding season... we were expecting much higher gold prices this year on account of various positive factors, but demonetisation has dealt a deadly blow," said Shetty.

"The current situation is very tough. We have passed through some very rough or recessionery patches in the past, but this is unprecedented. Demand and supply exists, but there is no money to conduct any business, people prefer to first spend on survival before buying jewellery," lamented the owner of a leading jewellery shop in the posh Juhu neighbourhood, preferring anonymity.

Worse, the leading players predict an uncertain, gloomy period ahead till December 30, followed by the Union Budge on February 1, 2017, and the upcoming GST to be implemented from April 1, 2017.

The Surprising Wedding Registry Item

Once I got engaged, I ramped up my exercise routine — and to my delight — my fiancé joined me! We started off with boxing classes, running along the river, and he even came to a few pilates classes. By far our favorite pre-wedding workout was SoulCycle, so I am very excited that for the first time ever, couples can add SoulCycle classes (and the iconic bright yellow bike!) to their wedding registries exclusively on Zola! It makes perfect sense that brides and grooms would want to add these workout dates to their wedding registries.

Turns out, my husband and I are not the only ones who like to sweat it out pre-wedding day. According to a recent survey of Zola couples, 70% pump it up extra hard at the gym leading up to the big day, and 60% work out with their S.O. at the gym at least 1-2x per month, many reportedly working out together on a weekly basis.

Why are couples so obsessed with fitness? Zola launched three years ago with the dream to let couples register for anything. In addition to registry mainstays that will never go out of style, like a KitchenAid Stand Mixer and Le Creuset Dutch Oven, today’s millennial couples want to register for experiences they can share together and fit their lifestyle. Overall, couples are taking health and wellness more seriously, so it makes sense that registering for that category is on the rise as well.

Outdoor, adventure and active experiences are all growing very rapidly as well. If indoor cycling is not your thing, you can always register for bikes, camping equipment, or a rock climbing excursion to get your heart pumping. Exercise related gifts are the perfect balance to all those food and drink related presents.

Now that we are married, my husband and I have continued exercising together and it is a great way to bond and relieve stress after a long week. Going to SoulCycle together is a wonderful way to keep the wedding energy going year long, since it is a gift that keeps on giving.

To tap it back with us you can register for SoulCycle 20- and 30- class packs here.

Jennifer Spector is the Director of Brand Strategy and Newlywed-At-Large at Zola, the wedding registry that will do anything for love. At Zola you’ll find all the gifts, experiences, and funds you want, all in one place. We help people get more of their registry. Sign up today and receive $25 towards your registry.

Angela Simmons

Angela Simmons had a lot of celebrate this year. Aside from getting engaged, she also welcomed a baby boy into the world with her fiancé Sutton Tennyson.

The couple hasn’t given out a lot of information on their baby, and have yet to reveal his name. Though in a new interview, Angela opened up a bit on birth of her son and what she had to say was quite surprising.

Angela revealed that her son was actually born prematurely, but thankfully came out, “screaming and eating on his own.”

Great news for the family, but one thing she and Sutton haven’t been getting much of is sleep. Angela revealed that her son is, “up every two-and-a-half to three hours.”

Though you won’t find Angela complaining about not getting her beauty rest. In fact, she looks at it all with a positive mindset by admitting that, “it's just an adjustment but it's a beautiful adjustment."

Lack of sleep isn’t stopping the couple from planning their upcoming wedding either. The plans are in full swing, with Angela also revealing that the big day is some time next year. She said, “we're working on it for the summer.”

It may also be a televised event. Angela continued to say, “I try to share as much as I can with film maintaining some sort of privacy, but my wedding day that's like a fairytale day to me. I would definitely want to share some aspects of that."

Here’s hoping that we will be able to witness Angela and Sutton’s day through pictures or a big tv event.

Dry Wedding

The word 'wedding reception' is often seen as a synonym for 'mad session, involving copious amount of alcohol that only ends when someone passes out in the residents' bar".

So, the prospect of a 'dry wedding' isn't a topic that comes up very often.

However, that was exactly what one bride was considering when she took to online forum Wedding Bee to seek advice on celebrating her big day sans alcohol.

KatelynRose30 explained that her in-laws often drank to excess and to avoid any messy behaviour on the day, she was considering a total ban on booze.

She also noted that a sober day would greatly reduce the cost but the reaction probably wasn't what she was hoping for.

Finding the perfect bridal gown for your body shape

Hello Bride! Your wedding ceremony is yours to feel and look really good.

To achieve this, choosing the perfect dress for your big day is really important.

The best wedding dress is not necessarily the most expensive or whitest. It is about how it looks when it finally comes on you.

Whether you are slim, thick, curvy or big-boned, there’s a dress made just for you, you only have to know what to look for!

So, with that below, with assistance from Brides site, we provide a guide for choosing the best dress that will complement each bride’s body size and shape.

Plus-Size Brides

First things first, you should be willing to embrace your curves and glow in them, not trying too hard to hide or bury them.

Having said that, your best bet should be a floor-length dress with little embellishment to create length.

Long lace sleeves should also be seriously considered as they will give your arms a slimmer appearance.

They are also really chic and sophisticated, so you’ll still be making a statement.

Petite Brides

Small, petite brides, try by avoiding dresses that make you look like you are trying to disappear on your wedding day.

In other words, avoid dresses that will make you look like you were swallowed by layers of tulle.

Plunging V-necks will help add some sexiness to your look without looking outrageous.

Hourglass Brides

Forget hiding your hips in a ball gown and play to your strength.

Make sure you are showing off your trim mid-section and go with a fit-and-flare style that accentuates your curves.

You know, the type that hugs your upper body and flares just at the beginning of your hips, further pronouncing the hour-glass shape.

Your groom will literally have his heart pounding when you walk slowly down that aisle.

Busty Brides

Finding the perfect neckline is the secret to the perfect wedding dress for brides-to-be with a larger bust.

Off-the-shoulder necklines were the hit of the Fall 2017 bridal runways, and done higher they can subtly disguise a bigger bust, while still showing off curves and a super feminine decollete.

If showing off those curves is number one your wish list — a demure V-neck is your best friend, and a major fashion hit.

Kollam beach turned into dream wedding destination

Christy P Wilson always dreamt of having the perfect wedding, but in the most unusual manner. So, when her fiance, Joby K Joy, arranged a beach destination as the place to say their wedding vows, her heart skipped a beat.

Images: bridesmaid dresses

The location was ethereal and straight out of the movies. “He wanted this to be a surprise for me. It was only when I arrived for the wedding that I realised this was where we would be wed,” gushes Christy, even as she describes how the beautifully decorated altar, decked in blue and white, had transformed the otherwise crowded Kollam beach to be the perfect wedding destination.

Owners of Jo and company, the event managers from Thiruvananthapuram, who conducted the wedding claim that this was the first time that a beach wedding was held at Kollam.

However, the trend has already caught on in bigger destinations like Kovalam, Varkala, Vypeen and Cherai beaches.

“So far, we have done over 10 beach weddings during the past two years. What is attracting youngsters to the idea is the ambiance that it provides. Secondly, they believe it will make the perfect photography material,” shares Greto Chacko, the Kochi-based manager at Lumier Wedding Company. The weddings are often held during the sunset and early mornings, to provide the perfect aura.

There are other reasons why beach weddings are only gradually making its grand entry to Kerala. “Beach weddings are a Western concept, where the bride and the groom hold a closed ceremony attended only by friends and immediate family. But, in Kerala, nobody, especially of the older generation, can think of restricting the crowd to just a 100 or 150 guests. If a marriage or a reception has to be held at a beach, limiting guests is a priority,” adds Greto.

Sofia Mathew, director, weddings at Watermark says that beach weddings could be the most challenging for planners. “Nothing is really in our hands. The wind could be too strong or the weather difficult. But making the arrangements is unique, as it requires decking up the altar for Christian marriages and mandapams for Hindu ceremonies. The aisle and the chairs are also decked up to lend in a special feel,” Sofia added.

Most of Sofia’s clients have been foreigners and North Indians who prefer destination weddings in the backwaters and on beaches.
