Tamika Catchings reveals marriage details and more

A whirlwind year awaits Tamika Catchings. Her last season in the WNBA. Adjusting to life as a newlywed. Her first book release.

And after it's all done? Catchings has even bigger plans. The Indiana Fever star revealed details of what's next for her, as well as the scoop on herrecent marriage and new husband Parnell Smith to IndyStar on Wednesday inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The fake out proposal

They were living in two states, Smith in Rockford, Ill., and Catchings in Indianapolis. He was coming back to visit, for a date night.

"And he arranged a car service to come pick me up and I was kind of like, 'Oh you know I'd rather drive myself. I can drive Downtown,' " Catchings recalled. "He was like, 'No, because afterward I want to be able to get in the car together and go home.' "

So the driver picks Catchings up and drops her off at a hotel. She wondered, was she in the right place? Then Smith emerges in the hotel lobby. He leads Catchings upstairs to a fancy dinner at the Eagle's Nest. While they sat eating, a waitress asked them if they were there for any special occasion.

"I looked at him and I'm like, 'No. No. Just here for date night, the official date night,' " Catchings said. "So we had a great dinner. I could tell he was kind of nervous." But nothing happened.

The real proposal

After dinner, the couple headed home. Catchings had an early workout the next morning, so she asked Smith how long he was going to stay. She needed to get to bed.

"So I go upstairs and I take off (my clothes) and I'm dressed so cute that night, so cute. I don't remember what I had on but I was cute," she said. "And I go and I change and I have my little bonnet on, my glasses on, all my sleep clothes on and he comes in and he has his iPad and he's just scrolling through his iPad and he was like 'Hey. Check this out.' "

Smith hands Catchings the iPad and pictures of the two of them start popping up. In the background is their favorite song, "What Took You So Long" by Tyrese. And then at the end, the iPad pauses and Smith looks at Catchings.

"He's like, 'I'm just so thankful for the opportunity that I met you and I'm so blessed that God brought you into my life,' " Catchings recalled. "And then at the end he was like, 'I just have one question.' And then it flashed on the screen and he was on his knees."

Asking her to marry him. She gasped.

"Yes. I will. I will," she said. "And then I got mad. I was like, wait a minute. We were at the restaurant and I was dressed cute and you wait until I look like this? That's got to be the epitome of great love, right?"

The wedding

There were few bells and whistles. The wedding took place at the Skyline Club. Before the ceremony, Catchings and Smith went to Monument Circle and Bankers Life Fieldhouse for pictures.

"You saw the picture of me dunking on him, yeah. In my heels. No, not really," Catchings said, laughing.

The wedding was quick. A reception was held in the room next door. It was a small gathering of family and friends.

"Twenty-seven people, including the photographer," she said. "Perfect."

Kids?

"I want to have a family. I want to have my own kids. I want to adopt some kids," she said. "When I was younger I said I wanted five. Parnell's not really there with me so we're working on him."

Three things she loves about Smith

"His smile. His spirit. And his hugs (and kisses)," she said.

Her last season

"I think it's a mixture right now (of emotions). I'm not sad because I'm still going through the training process of it," she said. "But I know once the season starts and especially as it gets to the end, it's going to be every single moment. Every single moment, even right now, it matters."

Post-retirement plans

"I don't know. I've talked so long about wanting to be a general manager, but what I've come to conclude and the thing I know I don't like? I love playing basketball, but I'm not necessarily one that is going to sit and watch game after game after game," she said. "So I love the background stuff that goes into the game and the team, especially with the players, just building players, so something with basketball more from a personal side and just being able to help them become better professionals."

Being an author

"Catch A Star," a book that reveals how Catchings fought through adversity to become a champion, will be released March 1. It took three years to write.

"It's just my journey, my journey starting from when I was a little girl and then now of course, through the injuries, just the experiences that I've had, the things that I've learned," Catchings said. "You guys know I'm a very faith-oriented person, so my faith is kind of intertwined through everything that's written."

The book can be purchased at Barnes & Noble and on Amazon.

"But I need you to buy it," she said. "because I want it to be on the (New York Times) best-sellers list, at least for one week. That would be awesome. It's like my bucket list, so let's make it happen."

Inside Veuve Clicquot's Miami Carnaval With Ciara

Believe it or not, there exists a place where people don’t care about fashion week or “Fall 2016″ and it’s called Miami Beach. Here, far beyond the walls of Milk Studios, the tides turned, the mojitos flowed, and the crowds shamelessly popped their polo shirt collars with abandon while the rest of the fashion establishment shivered in between shows and presentations.

Ciara and models Nina Agdal and Chanel Iman were among those who fled New York this past weekend for Veuve Clicquot’s annual “Carnaval” — a VIP version of the legendary Brazilian parade and alcohol and food binge-fest that takes place every year before Lent. Veuve Clicquot staged the far more sedate powwow to pour out its newest iced Champagne: “Rich.”

For the occasion, Museum Park, located in theMiami mainland but a 15-minute drive from South Beach, was colonized by winged women on swings, fancy food trucks, and makeup artists and hairstylists offering guests the flashy eyeshadow and braids that you might find on Rihanna. Attendees traded traditional carnival masks and costumes for their own extravagant displays of tropical swagger, including sky-high espadrille wedges and every print under the sun, literally. Finally, the highlight of the day was a salsa performance featuring gyrating dancers in beaded bathing suits and feathered crowns, who were followed around by a whizzing camera drone. Those hoping for a more authentic carnival experience would have found it nearby at the Pérez Art Museum exhibit of the Dominican artist Firelei Báez, who deals with black culture and Caribbean themes in his work.

Agdal, Iman, and Ciara had all never experienced a carnival of any kind before, and seemed utterly disinterested when informed of the event’s cultural significance. But what about indulging in guilty pleasures? Everyone can get behind that.

“After fashion week I like to have a burger and a beer,” said Agdal, who as a devotee of Tone House, one of New York’s most challenging workout classes, can easily afford such indulgences when she pleases. Iman, who ran out of clothes and was dressed in something she bought from her hotel lobby, said she wears sweatpants when no one is watching. Gabrielle Union was also around, but as the wife of Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade, presumably, she didn’t travel far.

Ciara, however, is not one to over-indulge. She is one of the most poised celebrities working, offering catnip quotes to red carpet interviewers that in the moment sound like gold – she is also one of the friendliest celebrities – but that actually reveal little upon closer inspection. For example, she admitted to not drinking water before red carpet events, like at the Grammys, where she wore a fitted dress with a slit up to her hipbone. Instead, she offered her guilty pleasure is food, bread in particular.

Even during fashion week, where she performed at a party for Keds and attended the Coach and Polo Ralph Lauren shows, she maintains a schedule of calculated moderation. “If you do too much, you feel like you’re working, rather than enjoying fashion,” she said. In other words, not even a Champagne-sponsored carnival was going to throw her off her game.

The only question that threw her was this: “Do you ever go to events with the intent to blend in with the crowd? To just enjoy yourself?” She immediately geared up for a positive response, but came up short. She whipped around to her assistants, repeating the question. They didn’t have an answer either.

Post-fashion week, times like these can be hard to remember.

The Westcott Theater now welcomes weddings

Wedding couples can now take the same stage graced by Matt & Kim, Steve Aoki, Rusted Root and the Avett Brothers.

This May, the Westcott Theater will undergo a transformation to host weddings, showers and corporate parties for 50 to 250 people.

Westcott owner Dan Mastronardi wanted to give couples an alternative to established wedding banquet halls and event venues.

"The wedding experience has evolved since our parents got married," Mastronardi said. "People want a more laid-back atmosphere, more of a party atmosphere and we can offer that."

Mastronardi wants to host weddings in June, July and August during the Westcott's slower season (when many concerts take place outside).

Tonight, the Westcott will host an open house from 6 to 9 p.m. with free food and drinks for couples. They will stage a wedding celebration so attendees can see what the venue will look like in the summer months.

DJs, florists, photo/video representatives and decor vendors will also be available to meet.

A platform has been installed to extend the stage to take up half the theater. On the ground, a 24-by-24 dance floor fills up the back of the venue.

And, of course, the venue will boast a thumping sound system which Westcott concertgoers know well.

The theater has hosted weddings before but the sloped concert floor has always posed a problem.

"We brought in temporary scaffolding to level the stage, and we're redecorating everything," Mastronardi said. "It's a red carpet treatment. It looks amazing. The lighting is awesome."

The theater will offer custom-designed wedding sets, tablescapes, onstage lighting, food and drinks at the theater's two bars.

Couples can have their names lit up under the historic marquee. Mastronardi said party hosts can also pick any caterer they want, though the Westcott's preferred caterer is Diamond Catering.

"Most venues require you to use their menu, but we're giving carte blanche to the couples," he said.

Ricky Monroe, manager of the Westcott Theater, said it took about two days to install the changes. (The platform will be torn down in time for Twiddle to take the stage on Saturday.)

The Westcott will still host concerts in the summer, and the regular schedule will resume in the fall. The theater was built in 1919 and has hosted everything from concert and movies to vaudeville acts and "Doctor Who" classes.

02 Life Hyperbaric Launches Oxygen Therapy In Dubai

O2 Life Hyperbarics has launched their mild hyperbaric oxygen chamber for the very first time in Dubai. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an alternative treatment that provides medical, physiological, wellness and aesthetic benefits for users.

O2 Life Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a safe, drug-free therapy that can be used regularly without any danger of oxygen toxicity or other side effects. The 02 Life hyperbaric chambers are now available throughout the UAE in leading gyms, spas, cosmetic, medical and wellness centers.

Oxygen therapy has been used by elite athletes, medical professionals and top cosmetic surgeons all over the world. The non-evasive breakthrough treatment, which can be used to reverse the effects of tissue degeneration, whether caused by illness, disease or injury, is very quickly gaining popularity throughout the UAE.

O2 Life hyperbaric chambers are pressurized enclosures that allow a person inside to experience greater than normal atmospheric pressures. The pressure, combined with ambient air and additional oxygen delivered via an oxygen concentrator, forces the oxygen to dissolve into the body’s fluids and travel to areas of the body otherwise difficult to reach.

The 5 best Austin beauty spots for getting all dolled up

When you want to put on your best pout and flutter those lashes, there's an overwhelming number of beauty options to turn to in Austin. Getting your makeup done is a luxury, but it’s also a fun way to treat yourself before that hot date, the conference you’re speaking at, or during a girls’ getaway.

With wedding season right around the corner, we sought out the best makeup services for the blushing bride, the mother of the groom, or the wedding guest. To help you navigate these glamorous waters, here are our five favorite places to get all dolled up.

Triage

This brand-new salon on East Fifth Street in the Corazon building is clean and inviting. Triage supplies massage, nail, waxing, and hair services, but also has in-house pros that can give you an expert makeup application. “Conquer the day” for $45 with a light application focusing on your favorite feature or get “camera ready” for $60 with a full application. Triage uses MAC Cosmetics, giving you the perfect amount of pop and color under any lighting. Additionally, you can bring your makeup bag in for $40 and spend an hour with an artist on how best to use your products. They’ll also advise you on what to hold on to and what can get tossed to help simplify and beautify.

Rae Cosmetics

Started by Austin beauty guru Rochelle Rae, Rae Cosmetics excels in enhancing your natural features to give you a healthy glow. At the retail location on West Second Street, you can shop the cosmetic line’s heat and perspiration-resistant products, suited for a warmer weather wedding with makeup that stays on all day, even when you’re shvitzing. Rae’s makeup artists have extensive training and will give you an application that makes it feel like you’re wearing nothing at all. And when you want a more dramatic look, Rae succeeds while still keeping you looking like you.

Walk-ins are welcome, but we recommend making an appointment (especially on weekends) to ensure you get what you want. Full applications start at $75, which includes false lashes if interested, but you can also opt for eye makeup only for $45. Rae also offers hairstyling services, so whether you want an updo for your night out on the town or need every strand of hair in place for the big day, Rae is your one-stop shop for hair and makeup.

Kiss n’ Makeup

Not only will Kiss n' Makeup make you look like a model ready for the runway, but the staff is also extremely friendly. This cute cottage on Burnet Road offers one-hour applications for $90 or a mini-makeup service for $45. Like Triage, you can bring in your current makeup for a lesson on what to keep, what to trash, and how to best use what you currently have. And if you love the look of false lashes, Kiss n’ Makeup will apply in 30 minutes for $25 to $30. The company also takes great care when working with brides, breaking down this service in two parts — a run-through and day-of application. The shop suggests scheduling a run-through, which starts at $120, two to three months prior to saying “I do.”

beGlammed

For the girl on the go, look no further than beGlammed, the online service that brings the makeup to you. While many companies service onsite (especially for brides), this is one of the best deals when you want an at-home application. With a variety of options to choose from, including the “pretty” application for $60 and the “glamorous” application for $250, you can also tack on a hair service at a slightly discounted price. Makeup services include airbrushing and false lashes, and custom, themed, or costume makeup.

BeGlammed allows for some relaxation on your special day — how it should be — so you can concentrate on having a great time with the girls, getting ready with no hassle. If you’re a bride and you book three or more of your bridesmaids, you can get 15 percent off your appointment. If you do go with the bridal package, it includes one makeup and hairstyling consultation prior to the wedding.

Aveda Institute

Aveda Institute has the best bargain in the entire city for a makeup application. For the wedding guest on a budget, it doesn't get better than this. While we don’t recommend this for brides to be, when you have a special occasion let an Aveda student in training try their hand at making you look beautiful. Not to worry though, a supervisor is always nearby to assist, and these blossoming ladies and gents have had the proper basic training to give you a beautiful application.

Using Aveda’s natural line of products, you can radiate flawlessly for only $10, allowing you a little extra spending money after your appointment to shop the company’s high quality makeup. For an additional $10, you can also get a lash or brow tint.
