Project Runway

In praise of 'Project Runway' embracing body diversity with its new season

"Project Runway" hasn't been a model of inclusivity in all areas. After all, Heidi Klum's whole "in fashion, one day you're in, the next day you're out" is kind of judgy, don't you think?

But when the venerable reality competition returns at 8 p.m. Thursday on Lifetime with a new season, the actual models will be a model of body diversity.

For the first time ever, "Project Runway" will be using models for the entire season who vary in size from the industry-preferred 0 to the real-life number of 22.

This means that the sizes usually overlooked by fashion's top designers will be vital to ultimately winning the contest.

The models will be rotated so that every contestant has a chance to work with all the different shapes and sizes represented.

Contestant Claire Buitendorp of Grand Ledge, Michigan, will compete in season 16 of Lifetime's 'Project Runway.'

It's a smart step to fight viewing fatigue for Season 16 and inject some new excitement into the series that will again be starring Klum, Zac Posen, Nina Garcia and mentor extraordinaire Tim Gunn.

"Project Runway" has had other proud moments involving body diversity. Two seasons ago, winner Ashley Nell Tipton's runway collection for the finale featured solely plus sizes.

And at the premiere of "Ghostbusters" last year, past winner Christian Siriano stepped up after co-star Leslie Jones complained on Twitter that nobody wanted to dress her for the event. Siriano created a stunning red gown for the athletic Jones, who's 6 feet tall and a former college basketball player. She was the hit of the red carpet.

P.S.: As the new season debuts, keep an eye out for Claire Buitendorp, 27, from Grand Ledge. According to her show bio, she is a Lansing Community College and University of Michigan alum and says the first person she designed for was Katy Perry.
