How to look tanned
How to look tanned, despite the British weather
After July’s heatwave, we all had high expectations for August. Eight days in and it’s not looking great. The sun has yet to make an appearance and the weather forecast for the next week is patchy. Fortunately, there are a few tricks we can employ to give our skin that sun kissed glow, without boarding a plane.
Gradual build-up
It takes a few days to build-up a tan, but gradual formulas offer the best natural-looking results. L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Elixir Self-Tan Serum, £15.99, needs to be applied every other day until you reach the shade you’re happy with. What’s impressive though, is how long the tan lasts.
If you prefer to apply your tan before you go to bed and don’t want to wake up with orange sheets, then look no further than James Read Sleep Mask Tan Body, £35. The depth of colour after one application will be enough for paler skin, too.
Tools of the trade
In terms of application, tanning expert Jules Von Hep recommends a certain accessory. “If you’re nervous, a mitt is the best tool,” he says. “It’s the tanning equivalent of what a brush is to hair. Plus, it protects your palms from staining.” Hep’s instruction is to simply mix the product onto the mitt and sweep over your body in the same way that you’d frost a cake.
Back relief
The problem with DIY tanning is that it is near-enough impossible to reach the middle of your back. Enter Bondi Sands Back Applicator, £6.99.
The paddle-shaped foam pad allows you to easily and comfortably apply fake tan to your entire back. In short, it’s a game-changer.
Call the experts
If all of the above feels like too much effort and you want your tan pronto, call Tax Luxe's Tan Line on 0800 0129 292. Impressively, it's open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, nationwide until 4th September. The tanning experts use the brand's award-winning formulas and will ensure your tan is natural-looking and streak-free.
Erase mistakes away
For when tanning misfortunes happen, and they do from time to time, there are several very nifty tan removal creams, including Primark's budget £3 Instant Tan Eraser and ModelCo Tan Remover Exfoliating Scrub, £12.49. Both help rub away tan marks around your feet, ankles, knees and palms.
