Gems Like Sofia Andres

Wear Your Hats With Flashy Text Patches and Gems Like Sofia Andres

Patches and embroideries can make for eye-catching designs. Even the simple dad cap can show your personality via graphic prints. Sofia Andres did just that with a denim blue cap decorated with a baby pink “BABE” patch.

This is a good accessory for dress-down days as it adds a fun element to your outfit. You can also choose from flashy text to other embellishments like crystals and pompoms.

Pull & Bear Corduroy Cap

Show some love to the City of Lights with this simple floral “Paris” cap. Wear this on your next Euro trip, or if you just want to reminisce your past vacation.

Stradivarius Floral Embroidered Cap

Pair this cap with your casual t-shirts or summer-looking blouses. This will give you a feminine look without going overboard with the pink hue.

Forever 21 Hollywood Patch Cap

For a monochromatic option, go for this one from Forever 21. Just like the Paris cap, this pays homage to busy Hollywood.

Topshop Gem-Embellished Denim Cap

If you want to add a little shimmer to your look, throw on this embellished cap from Topshop. People will see you coming from a mile away, especially if you wear this on a sunny day.

Fendi Pom Pom Baseball Cap

Don’t want to sport gems on you hat? Go for a pompom hat instead. This one from Fendi comes with multi-colored pompoms which adds a youthful vibe to it.

the Ever-Growing Sophistication

New Levi's Lawsuit Exposes the Ever-Growing Sophistication of Counterfeiters

Imagine that you head online in search of a pair of vintage-looking Levi’s, which have swiftly emerged as the latest must-have jeans, thanks to the resurge of retro styles on the runway and redone denim a la Vetements. Bloomingdales has sold out of your size, but you locate the exact same pair on what appears to be a perfectly legitimate – even sophisticated – e-commerce site for almost exactly the same price.

The website – which showed up towards the top of your Google search for “Levi's 501 Skinny Jeans” – bears photos that seem completely legitimate. The site makes you walk through all of the security measures that you would on Amazon or even Levi’s own site. It displays all of the indicia of authenticity and security that you have come to associate with authorized retailers, including the Visa®, MasterCard®, and/or PayPal® logos, and even includes the customary little customer service popup that allows you to chat with one of the site’s employees about sizing and/or the time frame for the delivery of your order.

You were not on the hunt for a fake pair of jeans, and yet, that is what you ended up with because – even with all of these valid-looking factors at play – what was not necessarily obvious from the looks of or even the experience provided by that website: It is nothing more than a sophisticated front for the sale of counterfeit jeans.

And it is just one of hundreds of perfectly legitimate-looking websites that Levi’s is currently fighting in order to “combat counterfeiting of its registered trademarks” and to “protect unknowing consumers from purchasing counterfeit Levi’s products over the internet.”

Fashion books

Fashion books that will add style to your coffee table

Much like investing in a matching set of towels or hanging art on your walls, owning a stack of coffee-table books goes a long way toward making your décor feel polished.

Fashion titles are an obvious choice: They’re visual, bridge the fields of photography, pop culture and design, and, yes, look great on Instagram.

Here are some of the best new tomes about clothing, style and design for 2017. All are available at major booksellers.

“Avedon’s France: Old World, New Look” ($40), by Robert M. Rubin. See France through the eyes of one of the most legendary photographers of the 21st century. Expect Audrey Hepburn, Jean Moreau and, of course, unmissable fashion.

“Rei Kawakubo/Comme Des Garcons: Art of the In-Between” ($50), by Andrew Bolton. This volume features gorgeous images of the clothing on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute exhibition, plus insights from the curator and a look into Kawakubo’s creative mind.

“The World of Anna Sui” ($50), by Tim Blanks. You’ll lose yourself in the eclectic, bohemian and creative world of an icon of New York fashion.

“True Style Is What’s Underneath: The Self-Acceptance Revolution” ($45). Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum, the mother-daughter duo behind fashion site StyleLikeU, have carved out a welcoming space on the internet. In their second title, they celebrate the myriad forms of beauty and style.

“Margiela: The Hermès Years” ($60), by Kaat Debo. This catalog, which accompanies an exhibition at the MoMu Fashion Museum in Antwerp, manages to lift the veil a bit on the elusive Martin Margiela and the designer’s tenure at Hermès.

“Harper’s Bazaar: 150 Years: The Greatest Moments” ($65), by Glenda Bailey. This tome commemorates the magazine’s anniversary and draws from its rich archives of photography, articles, fiction and poetry.

a lot in terms of fashion

I have evolved a lot in terms of fashion

She is one of the biggest fashionistas in Bollywood but Malaika Arora Khan said things were completely different way back in the early days of her career. The 43-year-old star, who has always impressed critics with her fashion choices, said she turned experimental over a of period time.

"I have evolved quite a bit from what I was. With age you kind of understand things better. My whole approach towards fashion and clothing has changed immensely."

"Initially I wouldn't think twice if I had to wear micro shorts, but now with time and age these things have come to consideration. Now, I am little more experimental. I was rigid earlier," Malaika said. The producer-host said she doesn't like it when people wear clothes which don't suit their body type.

"I want people to check themselves before they leave their houses," she added. Malaika today walked the runway for young designer Ridhi Mehra Sekhri, whose collection was inspired by the beauty and intricate interiors of Islamic domes.

Dressed in a red attire, the fashion diva looked elegant and sensuous. She said she has always liked walking for budding labels as they are the future. "Every time a young designer asks me to walk for them I feel it is my duty to say yes and promote them. And If I can be a part for their success it is great for me as well. I like pushing new talents. Even in reality shows, I like supporting the budding artistes. It makes me feel happy and content."

"After being in the industry for so many years, promoting the upcoming stars is our duty," she said. In her collection Ridhi presented printed handmade fabric stripes ingeniously woven together. The delicate bugle beads were turned into jaalis, while scallop print patches, fringes and metallic and fabric tassels added oomph to the ensembles.

"I love retro fashion and love the bell bottoms, the fringes, the tassels and the bling. It is my eternal go to fashion," Malaika said.

Project Runway

In praise of 'Project Runway' embracing body diversity with its new season

"Project Runway" hasn't been a model of inclusivity in all areas. After all, Heidi Klum's whole "in fashion, one day you're in, the next day you're out" is kind of judgy, don't you think?

But when the venerable reality competition returns at 8 p.m. Thursday on Lifetime with a new season, the actual models will be a model of body diversity.

For the first time ever, "Project Runway" will be using models for the entire season who vary in size from the industry-preferred 0 to the real-life number of 22.

This means that the sizes usually overlooked by fashion's top designers will be vital to ultimately winning the contest.

The models will be rotated so that every contestant has a chance to work with all the different shapes and sizes represented.

Contestant Claire Buitendorp of Grand Ledge, Michigan, will compete in season 16 of Lifetime's 'Project Runway.'

It's a smart step to fight viewing fatigue for Season 16 and inject some new excitement into the series that will again be starring Klum, Zac Posen, Nina Garcia and mentor extraordinaire Tim Gunn.

"Project Runway" has had other proud moments involving body diversity. Two seasons ago, winner Ashley Nell Tipton's runway collection for the finale featured solely plus sizes.

And at the premiere of "Ghostbusters" last year, past winner Christian Siriano stepped up after co-star Leslie Jones complained on Twitter that nobody wanted to dress her for the event. Siriano created a stunning red gown for the athletic Jones, who's 6 feet tall and a former college basketball player. She was the hit of the red carpet.

P.S.: As the new season debuts, keep an eye out for Claire Buitendorp, 27, from Grand Ledge. According to her show bio, she is a Lansing Community College and University of Michigan alum and says the first person she designed for was Katy Perry.

Fails Miserably

Clothing Company Tries to "Reclaim" Swastika Symbol, Fails Miserably

A European T-shirt and design company tried to "reclaim" the swastika and rebrand it as a symbol of peace by printing a rainbow version of the hateful Nazi symbol on T-shirts. Not surprisingly, the effort failed miserably.

KA design, whose tagline is "Questioning Boundaries," posted a video to Facebook in mid-July explaining the origins of the "5,000-year-old symbol," which had once stood for "peace," "love," "infinity," "luck" and "life" until, "One day, Nazism."

"They won. They limited our freedom," explains the video of the Nazi's use of the swastika. "...Or maybe not?" KA design then goes on to flash various crewneck tees, tanks and long-sleeve T-shirts (priced between $22 and $27) branded with the "new" rainbow swastika featuring either "PEACE," "LOVE" or "ZEN" stamped below it.

Reactions to the video, which has been viewed over 2.5 million times and has 12,000 comments, were largely livid.

"Doesn't make a difference what color it is," wrote one user on Facebook. "That's the symbol that greeted my family as they arrived at Auschwitz. What next, forearm bar code tattoos that all Jews were branded with? Retire the swastika, it's an insult to humanity."

Others pointed out that the original swastika found in ancient Buddhist and Hindu texts was not rotated 45 degrees, as are both the Nazi and KA design symbols. In addition to disgust over the symbol's Nazi connotations, users also called KA design tasteless for attempting to make a profit off the venture.

The Anti-Defamation League as well as several Jewish groups spoke out against the effort to "reclaim" the symbol.

The shirts, which were being sold on T-shirt marketplace Teespring, were removed by the company. They issued the following statement regarding their decision to pull the swastika merch: "Teespring would like to apologize for this incident and is taking action to ensure this does not happen again in the future." They noted to Al Jazeera that no shirts were sold and that on behalf of those offended, the company would donate to The World Holocaust Remembrance Center.

"Hatred and Nazism have won," the company wrote on Facebook. "We brought out the worst in people. We believe in a world of infinite forgiveness. We forgive everyone. And we hope to be forgiven. Let Love Prevail."

How to look tanned

How to look tanned, despite the British weather

After July’s heatwave, we all had high expectations for August. Eight days in and it’s not looking great. The sun has yet to make an appearance and the weather forecast for the next week is patchy. Fortunately, there are a few tricks we can employ to give our skin that sun kissed glow, without boarding a plane.

Gradual build-up

It takes a few days to build-up a tan, but gradual formulas offer the best natural-looking results. L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Elixir Self-Tan Serum, £15.99, needs to be applied every other day until you reach the shade you’re happy with. What’s impressive though, is how long the tan lasts.

If you prefer to apply your tan before you go to bed and don’t want to wake up with orange sheets, then look no further than James Read Sleep Mask Tan Body, £35. The depth of colour after one application will be enough for paler skin, too.

Tools of the trade

In terms of application, tanning expert Jules Von Hep recommends a certain accessory. “If you’re nervous, a mitt is the best tool,” he says. “It’s the tanning equivalent of what a brush is to hair. Plus, it protects your palms from staining.” Hep’s instruction is to simply mix the product onto the mitt and sweep over your body in the same way that you’d frost a cake.

Back relief

The problem with DIY tanning is that it is near-enough impossible to reach the middle of your back. Enter Bondi Sands Back Applicator, £6.99.

The paddle-shaped foam pad allows you to easily and comfortably apply fake tan to your entire back. In short, it’s a game-changer.

Call the experts

If all of the above feels like too much effort and you want your tan pronto, call Tax Luxe's Tan Line on 0800 0129 292. Impressively, it's open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, nationwide until 4th September. The tanning experts use the brand's award-winning formulas and will ensure your tan is natural-looking and streak-free.

Erase mistakes away

For when tanning misfortunes happen, and they do from time to time, there are several very nifty tan removal creams, including Primark's budget £3 Instant Tan Eraser and ModelCo Tan Remover Exfoliating Scrub, £12.49. Both help rub away tan marks around your feet, ankles, knees and palms.

A saree soiree

The term revival has benefitted traditional weaves in many ways. To support this spirit of revivalism, fashion entrepreneur Rasika Wakalkar is set to organise The Fashion Narrative to celebrate the saree as part of her annual Independence Day offering. Wakalkar has reached out to both weavers and consumers to make the event a grand success.

Wakalkar has also roped in renowned personalities from the fashion world to be part of the event. They are textile historian and scholar Rta Kapur Chishti, art-culture and textile patron Maharani Radhika Raje Gaekwad of Baroda, textile designer, researcher and craft revivalist Hemalatha Jain and Mayank Mansingh Kaul, who is a fashion designer, writer and curator of textile history. Handloom saree exhibitions and draping workshops are also on the cards.

However, the event is set to feature discussions beyond the revival angle. Gaekwad’s talk will highlight the role of royalty in fashion. Chishti will offer insights into her long association with weaves and weavers, while Kaul will talk about the metamorphosis of weaves in recent history. Jain, who has spent more than a decade teaching at prestigious fashion and textile institutes, will narrate the story of patteda anchu, a gorgeous chequered weave belonging to South Maharashtra and North Karnataka, whose history dates back to the 10th century.

Jain’s talk will bring to fore the importance of reviving crafts. In her quest to learn more about the patteda anchu, she travelled extensively across Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and finally to Gajendragarh. “It was a wedding saree that was offered to the goddess Yellamma Saundatti, when the daughter of a household got married,” said Jain. “I had heard so much about it, but had never seen one.” But she eventually managed to trace a master weaver who had long since given up weaving. “The weavers I tried to reach out to were either living in the city trying to make a living, or they were selling oil and driving auto rickshaws,” recollected Jain, who also met a devadasi in hopes of finding a piece of patteda anchu.

After finding the master weaver and convincing him to return to the loom, Jain founded a self-help group for the revival of patteda anchu, which today comprises 25 people, out of which 16 are weavers. The saree format of the weave that she revived now retails at premium online stories.
