PERFECTLY HILARIOUS “PERFECT WEDDING”

Before I even arrived at the Lighthouse Festival Theatre opening night of “Perfect Wedding,” a friend told me I was going to be in for a real LFT theatrical treat. She saw the smart, comedic farce/love story the day before and said “it is hilarious and each of the cast members was so wonderfully good in their roles, and (she) especially enjoyed their English accents. This was the best one yet!”

So what can I say, but yes, “Perfect Wedding” was perfectly hilarious and the cast put on a seemingly perfectly flawless performance. The audience was kept in stitches from the opening moments throughout most of the two acts. And younger people in the audience, who could perhaps relate to wedding mishaps and mayhem even more than I after 41 years of marriage, were getting an extra kick out of the riotous muddle the groom found himself in.

Without a doubt, tickets will sell out fast for this play which is on the LFT stage until August 6.

To quote LFT Artistic Director, Derek Ritschel, “a good farce is a show that takes an absurd situation and makes it so real that it becomes incredibly funny. There’s just something hilarious about watching other people dig their own holes deeper and deeper. However, something equally rewarding is watching those same people find a clever way out.”

Bill, the groom in “Perfect Wedding,” wakes up the morning of his wedding to find himself in the honeymoon suite of the English Hotel that has been booked for his fiancée to get dressed in the morning of the wedding. He has a hangover and worse yet, there is an unknown beautiful blonde in bed with him.

He doesn’t know whether he was or was not faithful to his fiancée during the night and is in a sudden panic with the thought that he is ”going to be divorced before he even gets married.” And, he is cursing the fact he is unhinged and “doesn’t take alcohol well.”

Bill has barely hidden the stranger in the hotel bathroom when the maid, Julie, his Best Man, Tom (who arrives just in time to be dragged and implicated somewhat reluctantly into the hole Bill is trying to climb out of) and the bride, Rachel, arrives.

Needless to say, the situation worsens as the lies get complicated and the mother of the bride steps into the picture. The audience is treated to racy double entendres, a love story and comedic farce at its best.

All six in the ensemble, each playing their debut performance for LFT, did an outstanding job in their roles. The maid, groom and best man parts were especially entertaining, being performed with exaggerated comedic expressions and impeccable timing in Robin Hawdon’s smashingly well-constructed farce.

The playwright shares that “the challenge with a farce is first of all to find that electric opening situation, that initial dilemma, misunderstanding, or moment of human error, from which all the future confusions will spring…” He hit it right with “Perfect Wedding,” which has now played around the world.

Mairi Babb plays Julie, the brilliant maid. Her credits include “War Horse,” “The Gift of the Magi,” Rita in “Educating Rita”.

Ephraim Ellis is Tom, the beleaguered Best Man. He has played Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Paddy Glynn in “Murdoch Mysteries” to name just two.

The over the top excited mother-in-law, Daphne, is performed by Sarah Machin Gale, who’s acting credits include “A Christmas Story,” “Calendar Girls,” “Romeo and Juliet.”

Cydney Penner, who is the perfect bride Rachel in this nightmare of a Perfect Wedding has performed role of Antigone in “Antigone,” Desdemona in “Goodnight Desdemona” and Erica in “Wash Up.”

The hapless groom, Bill, is played by Adrian Shepherd who has also been seen as Francis in “Suite Surrender,” Rob in “Leaving Wonderland,” Ferdinand in “Love’s Labours Lost,” plus more.

And Brianne Tucker, who plays Judy, Bill’s surprise bedmate and more (no spoiler alert here) has played Angelina in “Spirit Horse,” Noble Woman in “Reign,” Diana Morales in “A Chorus Line” and more.

The LFT stage was beautifully transformed into an elegant English honeymoon suite. Kudos to the creative team, production team and production sponsor Barber-Veri.

Couple kick goals with Etihad Stadium football wedding

On a frigid June night two years ago, 18,054 people assembled at Etihad Stadium for a contest of AFL teams.

Chantelle Schembri and Michael Yates were two faces in the crowd and perfect strangers until the quarter-time break, when a chance meeting changed the course of their lives.

The Western Bulldogs were up by six points, leading the Brisbane Lions, at this first major pause in play. It was good news for Dogs member Ms Schembri, who took the opportunity to buy a drink but, within the throng, lost her friend Chris – a mate from interstate who was making his Aussie rules match debut.

Needing an obvious landmark to regroup, Ms Schembri nominated a pop-up merchandise shop at gate six. She could never have forecast meeting her future husband there while waiting.

Bulldogs socks added extra warmth to the wedding.

A plasterer from Melbourne's west, Mr Yates was milling about the same footy paraphernalia outlet when his eyes were drawn to a blonde who sparkled. Ms Schembri's gaze met his and was simultaneously locked. She disapproved of the Brisbane Lions shirt this guy was wearing but, like everything else in the busy setting, even that faded away.

"I thought he was handsome and he was looking lost as well, so I started talking to him. I just walked up and asked, 'Did you lose your friend, too?' " she recalls of the moment.

"It was really natural. I don't know, he just kept smiling."

The pair talked for about 20 minutes before Ms Schembri's re-appeared and the parties went their separate ways, though not before an exchange of phone numbers that was quickly put to good use. The proposition of a first date had been flagged before the final siren.

"I texted first," Mr Yates, who was playing footy for North Sunshine at the time, remembered on Wednesday morning about two hours before marrying the woman he met that night.

"I'd seen this beautiful, lovely girl. She just caught my eye, I was looking at her and she just walked over."

Almost immediately, Ms Schembri's visions jumped to long-term.

"I told Chris that night: I'm going to marry that guy one day.

"It was just how he made me feel. The way he looked at me, it was like a 10-year-old about to open a present; his eyes were just full of excitement. It was just amazing."

The location for the pair's first organised date was the Bulldogs' next home game.

"From that day I thought, 'I can marry this woman,' " Mr Yates recalled.

"She just had this sparkle all around her."

By the time Mr Yates, 25, proposed to Ms Schembri, also 25, last November, he had converted from a quasi-Collingwood supporter to a Western Bulldogs fan. The Lions shirt he was wearing the first night they met was merely a show of support for the Lions-supporting friend he was at the footy with.

On Wednesday morning, inside Etihad Stadium by gate six, the pair wed: a first for the venue that has hosted Madonna but never a celebrant marrying a bride and groom.

The symbolism didn't end with the location that brought them pair together. Underneath Mr Yates' white shirt was a Bulldogs jumper, and warming the legs of his bride was a pair of footy socks: red, white and blue.

1. Wedding Invitations

Wedding invitations offer the first taste of your wedding to guests. Add a floral motif to the invites themselves, or incorporate a floral print in vintage-inspired stamps for a unique detail that your attendees will love, regardless of your actual décor theme.

2. Wedding Dress

Your bridal gown doesn’t have to be white. More and more brides are adopting a fashion-foward approach with colored wedding dresses (including pink, black, red, or black-and-white bridal gowns) and even ball gowns and sheaths in floral prints.

3. Veil

Whether you choose a chapel-length veil, cathedral, or mantilla, consider adding floral embroidery or beading for a sweet feminine touch. While lace-trimmed veils are popular among many of today’s brides, this beautiful detail will stand the test of time.

4. Wedding Jewelry

If you want a small part of your wedding to honor your favorite florals, choose a pair of earrings (or a bracelet or necklace) designed to resemble flowers with colored gemstones! This is a wonderful option if your groom says “absolutely not” to a floral-print theme.

5. Flower Girl Dresses

Take the term “flower girl” to an entirely new level and outfit your flower girls in beautiful dresses with floral-print fabric. For a more laid-back look, choose two mismatched dresses in various flower prints that complement each other.

6. Bridesmaid Robes

Gift your bridesmaids with colorful robes in floral prints to wear while getting ready for the big day in your bridal suite. Not only do silk robes look great in pre-wedding photographs, they’ll be cherished by your ‘maids years to come!

7. Bridesmaid Dresses

If you don’t want to dress your bridesmaids in full-on floral print, consider adding floral details by choosing a dress (or adding custom details!) that features delicate crystals in a flower motif on dress straps, sashes, or belts.

8. Mother-of-the-Bride Dresses

Although the MOB and MOG aren’t part of your décor, their attire can complement your wedding theme! Floral-print dresses for either the mother of the groom or mother of the bride will add a fresh, summery feel to a wedding!

9. Wedding Program

Regardless of whether or not you included a floral print on your wedding invitations, adding the motif to your ceremony program is a great way to get guests ready for the event to come - like this program that doubles as a fan to keep guests cool.

10. Chair Covers

If you’re using chair covers for your ceremony or reception, consider a design that incorporates floral appliqués. For a subtle and stylish look, alternate your chair designs by leaving some ceremony seating bare.

11. Parasols

Especially during summer wedding ceremonies, the sun can take your vow exchange from romantic and sweet to hot and sweaty. Keep guests cool during your vow exchange by offering parasols decorated with handpainted floral details.

12. Menu

Since most weddings incorporate beautiful floral centerpieces on reception tables, take the flower trend one step further by decorating paper menu cards with fun floral prints. You can even have an artist handpaint your design to match the fresh flowers!

13. Linens

In lieu of solid-hued linens, incorporate a tablecloth in a floral print at your rehearsal dinner or wedding reception. The unique design will set your event apart and give your celebration a vintage, feminine flair.

14. Wedding Cake

There are tons of wedding cake designs to choose from. If you love floral prints, consider adding a floral design to your confection using fondant, frosting, or even sugar flowers! Choose vibrant colors or keep designs in all-white for a more classic look.

15. Lighting Design

Gobo lighting makes it possible to project nearly any pattern on your dance floor, walls, or ceiling. The impressive lighting design can easily turn an empty, bare space into an opulent, stylish ballroom.

This Wedding is a True Nod to Nashville

When planning their wedding, Alexis Witman and Kurt Tahara were on the hunt for a venue in Nashville, the place they both called home. The spot they chose for their vows and reception blends the modern and traditional. “We loved how Ruby incorporated the the traditional, while still being modern,” Alexis says of the decision to host their wedding at the church-turned-venue on Blakemore Avenue near Vanderbilt. “We also loved how the huge windows opened up into the park — almost making our ceremony look like it was outdoors.” Ruby sits on the edge of Hillsboro Village and was more than enough space to accommodate Alexis and Kurt’s 100 guests on their big day.

For as long as Alexis could remember, she wanted a navy and white wedding. These dreams were set in motion after Kurt proposed in December of 2015. “As we sat out on Nashville’s pedestrian bridge, Kurt gave me a Christmas present. When I unwrapped it, it was a planner with a photo of us and the name ‘Alexis Tahara’ on the front. I looked back at him, and he was down on one knee to propose,” Alexis recalls. After the proposal, the pair headed to dinner to meet Kurt’s brother and sister-in-law who had played matchmaker for Alexis and Kurt a few years before. When they arrived, they were surprised to be greeted not only by his brother and sister-in-law but their entire family who traveled from across the country to help celebrate.

Take a look at this lovely Nashville wedding

Eight months later, on August 15, 2015, the pair exchanged traditional vows and walked down the aisle as Mr. and Mrs. Tahara.

Ruby features indoor and outdoor space, and the colorful, mosaic dragon in Fannie Mae Dees park (aka “Dragon Park”) behind the venue provides a colorful backdrop for photos.

When the time came to plan the wedding, a blue-and-white color scheme was the only option in Alexis’ mind. The bridesmaids donned lace wedding dress, and the groomsmen and groom wore matching ties.

“After we got engaged, I went home to Pennsylvania to spend Christmas with my family. My mom (who knew we were getting engaged), had already set up a bridal gown appointment for me at a small local shop. It was there — just the two of us — that I ended up buying the second dress I tried on. I loved how simple it was, with just a dash of sparkle,” Alexis says of selecting her dress.

Our Wednesday Wedding series is sponsored by:

After scouring the internet, Alexis discovered how wonderfully natural green worked with the navy-and-white color scheme she’d selected. This was the inspiration for the flowers and décor.

Something old: a bracelet that Alexis fashioned from her grandmother’s pearl necklace. Something new: pearl earrings from Kurt. Something borrowed: earrings from her mom’s co-worker. Something blue: her shoes.

The bride, in her simple, elegant gown, and the groom with a navy tie, share a moment outside of Ruby before the ceremony kicked off.

Traditional vows were exchanged in front of approximately 100 of Alexis’s and Kurt’s loved ones.

Alexis and Kurt tied the knot and shared their first kiss as husband and wife before kicking off the wedding celebration!

The couple did all of the planning themselves but were grateful to have help on The Big Day. “We did have Ruby’s help coordinating on the day of the wedding, which was an absolute godsend and something I would recommend for any and every bride and groom,” Alexis tells us. With someone else to stress over the details, Alexis and Kurt were able to enjoy an evening with friends and family. After the 6 p.m. ceremony, the guests were treated to a taste of Nashville during a cocktail hour featuring local beers and small appetizers that paid homage to Nashville (think hot chicken and grits bites!). “Because it was a destination wedding for most of our attendees (I am from Pennsylvania, and Kurt grew up in Indiana), we wanted our guests to fall in love with Nashville and everything it has to offer — just like we did,” Alexis shares. The Nashville-themed bites continued with a buffet dinner of dishes influenced by Nashville’s food culture. They even opted for Nashville’s iconic Retro Sno’s Original Shaved Ice’s shaved ice in lieu of a cake. If that doesn’t scream Nashville, we are not sure what does!

Alexis’s and Kurt’s wedding night was one to remember! Delicious food, tasty drinks, tons of dancing and gales of laughter made this one for the books.

We adore this personalized sign from Nashville’s Hatch Show Print! “Not only was it one of the first spots I visited when I arrived to live in Nashville but as both my dad and my grandfather worked in the typesetting industry, it was a cool piece to have; a bit of an homage to my family history,” Alexis says of the sign.

Guests enjoyed local brews and wines while noshing on Nashville-inspired food during the cocktail hour, held on Ruby’soutdoor covered patio.

Alexis and Kurt shared a moment during their first dance!

The high ceilings and large windows in the ceremony and reception space made the room feel open and airy. As the sun set, the room was warmed by string lights.

Paul Simon’s “Father and Daughter” played as Alexis enjoyed a dance with her father!

After returning from their honeymoon, Alexis and Kurt moved to Houston, Texas. “The wedding kind of served as our farewell to the city, which made it even more special to have little Nashville touches in the wedding,” Alexis tells us.

Thank you to Alexis and Kurt for giving us a glimpse inside their big day! We wish you a lifetime of love and happiness!
