Kate and William Begin
theDuke and Duchess of Cambridge have arrived in India for their much-publicized week-long tour of the country, a trip that has been calculated to strengthen ties between Britain and its former colony.
Prince William and Kate Middleton flew from London to Mumbai this morning via British Airways (this time, there was no private jet for a couple who were recentlycriticized in the British press for what was seen as their ‘extravagant’ lifestyles.)
They had a somewhat somber engagement to carry out on their arrival at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel: laying floral wreaths in tribute of the people killed there in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks.
The Mirror reports that Kate and William declined to stay in the lavish suite where President Obama stayed in 2010, but nevertheless chose the expansive Tata suite to comfortably accommodate them and their 11 members of staff.
India’s tradition of colourful, patterned fabrics has already been reflected in Kate’s choice of outfit for her arrival—a jewel-bright red Alexander McQueen blouse and skirt in a paisley print.

However, Kate’s 9ct gold ‘Temple of Heaven” earrings by Cassandra Goad are described on the designer’s website as being Chinese—rather than Indian-inspired. The earrings retail at £1,495 ($2,112) and Kate has owned them since 2010.
The Alexander McQueen outfit, with its flared peplum top, was suitably formal for Kate’s welcome to India, but later in the day she changed into a beautiful summer dress that is fabulously informal and perfect for the subcontinent’s warm weather.
The pink, red, and turquoise dress is by Mumbai designer Anita Dongre, and its long sleeves helpfully provide protection from the sun. Kate accessorized with a pair of Rayban shades for the next engagement on her schedule: joining in a game of cricket with Mumbai children.
She and William have a packed schedule for the next week of their tour, including a visit to the Taj Mahal as well as to some of India’s infamous slums.
